A handmade shoe lasts a long time when it is looked after.

  1. Smooth leather: dust with a soft cloth; nourish from time to time with a neutral or colour-matched cream.
  2. Suede: brush dry, always in the same direction; lift marks with a suede eraser.
  3. If they get wet: let them air-dry away from heaters and direct sun, with paper inside.
  4. At rest: keep them in the Prua dust bag, out of the light. Alternating two pairs lets the leather breathe.

Leather Care

PRUA shoes are made to be lived in. And, like anything made of leather or suede, they become even more beautiful when cared for regularly and with the right gestures. Here you will find simple, practical guidelines to keep PRUA materials in the best possible condition, while respecting their natural character. Before any care treatment: remove dust and surface dirt, always work gently, and allow the shoes to dry naturally, away from direct heat.

For smooth leather, the rule is simple: clean little, but clean well. After wearing, use a soft, dry cloth to remove dust and marks. If necessary, use a cloth lightly dampened with water and dry immediately. To nourish the leather, periodically apply a neutral cream or a specific leather conditioner, using a very small amount and spreading it evenly. Allow it to absorb, then go over the surface with a clean cloth. If the leather gets wet, dab gently without rubbing and allow it to air-dry; once dry, restore its softness with a small amount of nourishing product.

For suede, the goal is to keep the nap clean and “alive”, while avoiding water and oily products. Use a suede brush (ideally a crepe brush or one with suitable bristles) and brush dry, using light strokes and always in the same direction. For small stains, act promptly: dab gently with a dry cloth without pressing down, then brush once the area is dry. If necessary, use a suede eraser on marked areas, working gently. Avoid creams and polishes: on suede, they can leave marks and weigh down the surface. If you want to protect the material, you can apply a protective spray specifically designed for suede, testing it first on a small, inconspicuous area and allowing it to dry completely.

For the rubber sole, maintenance is simple. Remove dirt with a soft brush or a damp cloth. For more noticeable marks, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap, then rinse the cloth and wipe again to remove any residue. Dry thoroughly before storing the shoes. Avoid solvents or harsh detergents: they can dull the rubber.

Two habits really make a difference over time. The first: alternate wear, whenever possible, to allow the materials to breathe between wears. The second: store them properly. Keep the shoes in a dry place, ideally with some light paper inside to help maintain their shape. If you use shoe trees, choose ones suitable for leather and avoid those that expand too aggressively.

Finally, one important note: leather and suede are natural materials and may show slight variations and signs of wear. This is not a defect: it is part of their character. With regular, gentle care, your PRUA shoes will maintain their beautiful appearance for a long time, on and off the boat.
